Project Management Inside of WordPress

I have a friend who was asking about project management inside of WordPress.  I use Asana for a lot of my stuff (which I love), but I had seen a Project Management plugin that came out not too long ago that I thought I would check out. Turns out it is pretty awesome. It even has a nice premium upgrade ($15 for single site) that let’s you create a nice front end for clients. Benefits Unlimited Projects Unlimited Users No recurring costs In-expensive to start Permission Level Views (Users only see their views) Permission Level Notifications (decide on every item who to notify) Milestones, Sub-Task Lists, Due Dates Reordering of Tasks Actively being developed Drawbacks Relatively New Product Can’t see how to Archive Tasks and Projects when complete Would Like’s It would be nice to have some nice way to integrate with this plugin.  I would like to integrate some billing in here.  Perhaps that would be a good add on for the developer to look at next… or perhaps I will develop it....

Custom Projects Functionality

Problem: Client wanted to create an easy way to add dynamic projects to their site to show up featured, on sale, and other project listings.  They wanted to make it easy to add this to other sites as well. Solution: I created a custom post type called projects with a bunch of custom fields for the metadata.  I then created page templates for the project archives, individual projects, and custom front page templates.  Here are some screenshots. NOTE: All design was done by Gray, from Gray Creative.  He is a fantastic designer and I highly recommend him. Project listing page Front page of project integrating parts Project custom post type. Individual project with all it’s custom fields. Project templates applied to another...

Educational Website Network

Goal: Bring easy to build website to the University of North Carolina. Solution: In 2009 I built the Web.unc.edu WordPress Multisite Network.  What started out with a single class and a single site has grown to over 4500 sites and 18,000 users.  It has replaced the main campus website solution and now has a full time support staff of 5 people. This network is protected by multiple security plugins, backed up offsite, optimized across four servers, cached for speed, has over 100 themes and dozens and dozens of plugins to meet the educational community at UNC Chapel Hill. It is being used for professional portfolios, department/unit websites, special events, databases, classrooms, and many other things. We have a fabulous support forum (one of the sites on our...

Multisite Networks for Web Providers

Goal: Build a web application that would allow the client to easily roll out websites for target audiences and charge them a monthly fee. Solution: I have build several WordPress multisite networks that target specific groups with plugins, support, automated billing and domain mapping.  A kind of mini WordPress.com, but targeted to for specific users. The biggest was my own Web Hosting company focused on small businesses called Van’s Websites (which has been bought by Fiddlers studios). Here is one for therapists. I have also set up a network focused on dentists, and currently have a few other simliar projects I’m working...

PDF Database

Problem: Client came to me as they were migrating to WordPress.  They had an old custom developed PHP program they used to share PDF’s with folks.  This database took hundreds of hours to develop and thousands of dollars. Solution: It occurred to me that we could do this in WordPress pretty easily.  So in a few hours we build out the backend with some custom fields, custom post types, and custom taxonomies. And in a few more hours we had the front end.  It turned out great and is WAY easier to manage and augment than the old...
