To Include or Not To Include Post Formats

You may have heard all the hype about the Post Formats that were going to be available in the upcoming WordPress 3.6 release… well, no more. Alas, it was a bit too much and they have decided against including it in this upcoming release.  I have mixed feelings.

On one hand, this augments and shows off what you can already do with WordPress.  This makes it more powerful to the end user and potentially more uniform for the different formats.

But on the other hand, with great power comes great confusion.  I can see it now already… “Wait, what?  When do I use what format?”  And the code behind it is not bad, but it adds more to the complication.

When to use Post Formats

If you are wondering if you should use post formats on your project think about the different types of content you publish.  It really is most focused on bloggers that add video, images, quotes, status updates and that sort of thing to their sites.

If you have a client that needs that sort of easy interaction post formats might be a good option to look into.  Here is a good link to get you started: http://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Formats.

Unfortunately there is not many plugins out there that make this easier… yet.  But I’ll keep my eyes out.
